Dr. Volwiler was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. She graduated from University of the Pacific in 1986 with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy. After working for several years in Anchorage at an adolescent Chemical Dependency hospital, she continued her education at Washington State University where she completed her Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and her Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology. She interned at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System with a specialty in Behavioral Medicine, treating those with chronic illness.
Following internship, Dr. Volwiler completed a two year Postdoctoral Fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine in Geropsychology and Family Caregiver Research. During this time, she became licensed as a Psychologist in the state of CA .
After moving to Spokane, Dr. Volwiler started a private practice in 1999. She is licensed to practice as a Psychologist in the state of WA. Dr. Volwiler is active in the community as a guest speaker and has served on a number of boards including the Alzheimer’s Association and Washington State Psychological Association.
Dr. Volwiler’s approach to psychotherapy is to provide a safe environment for change. She is a generalist which means she treats people with a variety of psychological issues. In her work she focuses on reducing and managing psychological symptoms, and creating a supportive, constructive atmosphere for growth. She utilizes a variety of approaches including cognitive-behavioral, humanistic and interpersonal.
